We are an organization of women who work together to support our congregation and our community. We are friends who gather for study, social activities and above all, for the personal growth of the individual so that each may find an opportunity to fulfill her potential as a person and as a Jewish woman.
On a national level, the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Emeth is part of the Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ). We support many national and worldwide programs of the Reform Movement through our Youth, Education and Special Projects fund (YES Fund). We share programs and ideas with women around the country.
Our ultimate goal is to meet the needs of women of all ages and lifestyles who are part of our congregation. Whether you are a new member of the congregation, a mother of a religious schoolchild, single or newly married woman or retired, there is a place for you at Sisterhood. Our Rosh Chodesh observances are both educational and fun, as we explore ways to celebrate this holiday designated for women. In service to the community, Sisterhood members can be found cooking and serving food for the Emanuel Dining Hall. On a quieter note, we will continue to provide holiday greetings to our college/military youth, light the Shabbat candles, decorate for Sukkot, and support religious school activities, while providing an annual Shabbat luncheon and Passover baskets for some of the Seniors in our community.
We invite you to join Sisterhood and become part of a great organization that will enrich your life and make a difference at Congregation Beth Emeth. Please contact the temple with any questions about joining Sisterhood or about upcoming events.
To ALL the Ladies of Beth Emeth: Please join us at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 29th (Note Date Change) to help Sisterhood kick off another exciting year! There will of course be Ice Cream, but this is not your regular Ice Cream. This is from Marble Slab!!! They bring the slab, the ice cream, and all the fixin's to be mixed right before your eyes into your very own personal unique dessert sensation. Then we top it off with a cup of Champagne!!! What could be better?? This fabulous event was a blast last year and is free to all Beth Emeth women, but advance reservations are absolutely necessary. RSVP to Kim vonWeltin no later than Friday, August 27th.
Sisterhood Judaica Shop has a Website!!!
We have joined forces wih Judaica Beautiful to offer our customers a beautful, easy way to shop from their own homes. The items are all georgeous!! Some are the same as we have avilable in house, but many others are items we would not be able to stock due to their large order minimums and overhead. Sisterhood gets a percentage of all sales made from the site, while Judaica Beautiful does all the work... It's a WIN - WIN situation!!! Shop now.
We are also able to offer advertising space on our site, so if you know of anyone who may benefit from an advertisement there, or have suggestions for where we can promote our site, please see Kim vonWeltin.
Sisterhood’s 100th Anniversary celebratory cookbooks have arrived! The first copies of “From Generation to Generation” are available for purchase for only $12. As in all we do, proceeds from our cookbook sales will benefit Congregation Beth Emeth as well as future Sisterhood projects. Cookbooks will be available in the synagogue’s gift shop or contact Jan Goodman.
Thanks for all the hard working volunteers who helped to make our spring garage sale a success. We could not have done it without you. There are those who brought food to help feed our volunteers for four long days (one lasting from 9:00 am. to 9:00 pm.), and many sisterhood members, spouses of members, non Beth Emeth women (who come twice a year) to help set up and work the sale. Thanks to our custodians who bring up the racks, set up the tables and help in many other ways.
The money Sisterhood collected goes toward items we purchase for Beth Emeth, scholarships for adult Jewish learning, helping our youth go on trips and attend meetings, just to name a few.
Our volunteers were: Ari and George Bodnar, Sheila and Phil Weinberg, Fred and Barbara Katz, Gloria and Bob Jacobs, Barry and Joanne Kittinger, Fred DeVries, Steve Jonas, Marcia Russakow, HarrietAnn Litwin, Brooke Carroll, Sheila Nathanson, Laura Ciporin,Michelle Engelmann, Sue Paul, Dini Silber, Nancy Marcinkowski, Cheryl Hampson, Esther Schmerling, Meredith Wilkes, Kim Vonweltin, Joyce Rovine, Sue Milazzo, Betty Chambers, Donna Benarey, Heather Margolin, Kathy Klein, Andra Sklar, Rosalyn Lieberman, Ethel Parsons, Kathy Greschler, Rose Petrick, Karen Caplan, Ellen Wagner, Cindy O’Neil, Andrea Savitch, Florence Green, Teresa Scheiner, Jan Goodman, Judy Blake, Marge Maerov, and Laurie Ross. Many of our clients could never afford the great stuff they get at Beth Emeth.
After the sale the items that were left over were distributed this way: books went to a local hospital, small stuffed toys went to soldiers in Afghanistan who distribute them to children. The shoes went to Shoes 2 Share International, the clothes went to the Sunday Breakfast Mission, our youth lounge got some computer items and some games, the food that volunteers made and bagels donated by Manhattan Bagel went to both Sojourner Place and Sunday Breakfast Mission, ceramic masks went to the Wilmington Drama League, even the crutches that were donated will be going to Haiti Relief and all the other items went to a poor rural church in West Virginia. Nothing went towaste.
And last, but not least, thank you to our Beth Emeth members and non members who donated great things for this sale. Without these donations there would not be a sale.
Remember it is never too early to start saving for the November Sale.
